4, 24, 72 Seasons

In the East Asian cultural sphere, there is a tradition of partitioning the year into 4 seasons, 24 solar terms, and 72 pentads. Each of the four classical seasons thus consists of six solar terms, each of which can be further divided into three pentads. A pentad usually lasts five days, but sometimes six, meaning that a solar term lasts between fifteen and sixteen days. The solar terms and pentads are named after astronomical, meteorological, phenological, biological, or socio-cultural phenomena that occur at that time of the year.

This calendar displays the current pentad, solar term, and season and an illustrative photograph for each. It uses the Japanese names for the pentads, solar terms, and seasons.
